To follow up on class discussion about how one might use virtue ethics to guide campus drinking rules, I went and found the '99 Harvard study on campus drinking. The study can be read here. It reports that 44% of U.S. college students engaged in binge drinking during the two weeks before the survey. Now, as some said "let bringers just face their own consequences." Problem is, often drinking affects others. When asked about effects of another's drinking....
71% had sleep or study interrupted
23% had a serious argument
57% had to take care of an intoxicated student
16% had property damaged
36% had been insulted or humiliated
11% had been pushed, hit or assaulted
23% had experienced an unwanted sexual encounter
1% had been the victim of a sexual advance, assault or "date rape"
So, what are some thoughts here? Surely it is not a fact, is it, that college just means irresponsible drinking, right?

Now, I don't condone under age drinking by college students, but I think the reasons college students drink should be considered and taken into account. Today, students are facing increasing pressure and stress to perform in the classroom. Students are given more homework and they are expected to reach increasingly high standards in order to get into the college of their choice. Therefore, some students may drink in order to relieve stress. Students may drink after just finishing a big exam. These and other reasons lead students to drink. Maybe we need to consider the reasons for student drinking. That may lead to answers to other questions such as how can we stop irresponsible drinking.
I do not necessarily agree with the 'No Alcohol, period' policy of Holy Cross. In my opinion, college is more about the experience than academics. People certainly learn better through experiences, both good and bad, than sitting in a classroom. Therefore, students should have the freedom, as they will in the real world upon graduation, to make choices regarding their lives. Some will be good, others bad, but that is how we will learn. If we have all of our options taken away from us, then we can't learn to make responsible decisions on our own. The set of virtues is handed to us, not formulated by our own lives...
College is not the only reason for irresponsible drinking. However, the aspects that come along with a college atmosphere are a large part of why students get out of control. There is the pressure of classes, the on - going feeling of the need to fit in, and the feeling of breaking the rules since most students are under the legal age. By looking at the survey, you can see that binge drinking leads to a lot of bad results.
Not matter where you go to school or where your from or how old you are, the problem of underage drinking becomes an issue. The legal age is 21, this is unarguable. So in an ideal soceity everyone will follow this law. Once a student reaches the age of 21, does this mean they are automaticly ready for alcohol and can control themselves with it? No, over course not. I feel that drinking really is not that big of a deal and that their should not be a drinking age. Some may feel this is a bold statement. But if everyone in this county were old enough to have a beer when they were born, kinda like pop or milk, then alcohol would just be another beverage. Every teenager loves pop. But how many college students limit their pop intake because they realize it is unhealthy. People would still drink pop, just as they would beer, because their thirsty. But in our society, when was the last college students went to a party and bragged the next day that they drank a whole case a pop the night prior. I feel the drink age is mostly blame for the negative stastics on alcohol. Occasionally, people drink to much, and they learn from it, hopefully, and so what if u get woken up because a friend is getting sick, thats why you are their friend. Also, one major problem is many students are not exposed to alcohol until college. I have always personally felt that one should learn about alcohol young. This way they dont have to worry about getting drunk for the first time with people they dont know, may not trust, and not knowing their own limits. Its not about the drinking its about drinking responisible. This blog post may be extreme and over the top and will never happen but i feel it is an important view on how our society functions.
Tom Haunert is anonymous, i forgot to put my name in.
It is my opinion that the drinking, drug, and sexual behavior of college students reflects directly upon the education that they receive.
Why is Holy Cross not producing more students who say, "This behavior is morally wrong: I will not participate in it"?
I guess i posted in the wrong blog, this is why i prefer forums but anyway here is original post about alcohol: Let binge drinkers face their own consequences and let those who are bothered by them go to the library, it is not like a drunken student is gonna follow you wherever you go when you wanna study. For those who where "insulted or humiliated" and then reported it on a survey deserve to be insulted, let them cry to their moms not to me.I am saddened that drinking in colleges is this big of an issue, if you compared the colleges that have a dry campus and those that dont, grades are usually the same, people are usually the same, the only thing that makes them all different is that the students on the dry campus will tell you about their creative way of hiding their alcohol
Anonymous thinks that the drinkin age should be 18 just like in europe! Europe is 1000x better than amerisuck . You cannot base your argument on drinking age becuse it is not based on scientific fact but a bunch of bored house wives who decided to make a law (MADD).
Well, I diagree with the anonymous person's arguement, but a good point is brought up. Europe faces less fatalities from drunk driving. This is partly due to their strict laws on drunk driving, but also because of their culture's relaxed stance on drinking. Over there, as I have been to England several times, getting totally smashed is not as popular with their teenagers as it is with our teenagers. This is why I feel the age rule on alcohol in necessary. I may not agree with it, but our culture is too immature to have a lower drinking age or no drinking age at all. Only with stricter drinking laws will we have a chance at fixing this drinking problem.
First,I personally think that these statistics are outdated. With technology these days i believe that it is much easier to drink heavily and still get work done than it was back then. I also think we should be able to drink at a younger age. A lot of people drink becuase they think it is the cool thing to do. There was a study done about speeed limits that asked if speed limits were higher would people slow down? They found that in states with higher speed limits people actually drove significantlly slower than the ones with lower speed limits. I think alot of wanting to binge drink is mental becuase teens want to fit in and show that they can rebel against law and their schoool. Therefore, I beleive that if the drinking age was lowered, college drinking would not be QUITE as much of a problem as it is today.
I completely agree with Tom. The problem is the federal law which says that it is illegal for those under the age of 21 to purchase or drink alcohol. Though due to the harms of alcohol there should be some kind of age limit. Children definitely should not be allowed to purchase or consume alcohol without parents. Stricter laws do not help in the case at all. Just as making alcohol illegal caused at all of problems, having the legal age set at 21 is causing problems as well. I definitely believe that experience is key in this situation and most of college students first experience of alcohol is people binge drinking when it should be someone teaching them responibility. I also find it interesting people argue alcohol could be used responibility while all other kinds of drugs, in particular illegal drugs, use is equivalent to abuse.
College doesn't just mean irresponsible drinking. See while you are in college you have the people that are now away from their parents and can do whatever they want. they can stay out all night and not have to come home and drink all night and not care about anything. But if you look at the kids that parents let them go out to a party while they were in high school and let them have a life, those people don't go out and binge drink. they will go out to a party, but they know when to stop. Yes, some people are not like this but i bet that most are.
I agree with Laci. College students "over-enjoy" their freedom when they go away for college. They experiment with different things. Their friends are doing the same things and think that they are cool doing drugs and drinking. College students do not understand the word moderation.
I think someone said in class on Monday that the binge drinking problem will be impossible to solve with the legal drinking age stuck at 21. I agree with that assertion. I think they way to solve the problem is to teach children at a younger age how to be responsible with alcohol. That is impossibility. European countries have a much lower drinking age and as far as I know they don't have the same problems with alcohol abuse among teenagers and young adults.
I agree with Alex. I think that the example that parents set at home, when a child is growing up, has a big impact on the way children will view binge drinking when they get older. If parents set an example of drinking responsibly, their children are more likely to see drinking as something that is done in moderation and not something that is done to excess.
As far as drinking in college, I feel that the people that binge drink are people that are not exposed to alcohol earlier then moving away from their parents. I have friends that have very strict parents and did not let them go out late on weekends in high school and as soon as they move away and have no rules and no parents to worry about they go nuts and rebel. i feel that if we are exposed to alcohol earlier in our lives it would not be such a problem in college and on college campuses.
I Believe if you are brought up to respect alcohol, and your parents teach you the dangers of binge drinking you can be a more responsible college student. it is far worst to have the strict kind of parent who dosen let their kid do anything then expect them to go off to college and not get in trouble with things they have never been exposed to.
it all starts with parenting. parents these days let television, the media, schools, and childhood friends teach thier children about our society's vices. kids often missinterpret the message or tottaly ignore it. kids need responsible parents to explain to them early on about the vices and evil in the worl. also to complement this, parents are to teach them of the good things in this world. children in turn, having learned these things from thier caregivers, will hopefully know to reason for themselves what is good and what is bad. teaching children good virtues will shape reponsible adults.
I think that if parents let their children have the option to experiment with alcohol in the safety of their own homes, it could possibly have better out comes than having kids sneeking around and possibly getting cought. Also it makes it not such a "rush" to go out and drink if they have always had an option to do it.
